Fleas
Is one flea something to be concerned about? It depends on how you feel about fleas. Adult fleas make up only 5% of the total flea population. For each flea you see, there are 2 fleas in the pupa stage, 7 in the larval stage, and 10 eggs (for a total of 19 fleas in waiting). These other flea stages won’t be found on your pet. They live in our carpeting and the cracks and corners of our homes and yards.
Fleas like temperatures of 65 to 80 degrees with humidity of 75-85 percent. When these conditions are met, 10 fleas on 1 dog for 30 days can result in 90,000 flea eggs.
Fleas do more than cause our dogs and cats to scratch. They are carriers of diseases and help transmit tapeworms to our pets. A heavy infestation of fleas can cause our pets to become anemic and can result in death if not treated.
The good news is that there are products to protect our pets from fleas. From topical preventatives to a monthly pill, we can help you determine what product is the right one for your pet and your lifestyle.
