In Memory:
Wolfie
1997-2010
In 2004 my beloved dog Wags died. I was devastated as was our other dog, Sammy. We began our search for another dog right away. We had raised Sammy & Wags from pups, but this time we wanted to rescue a dog. We found Wolfie on Petfinder.com. He had just had a second back surgery and had not recovered the full use of his back legs. We didn’t care about his legs - we knew he was the one for us. He needed us. HA!
The shelter people brought him to our house so he could meet Sammy. They didn’t think we would adopt him once we saw that he couldn’t really walk. They were wrong. We had been through back surgery with Sammy so we were familiar with his condition and knew that in time he would recover. He would always walk funny, but that was part of his charm. Wags had been the ultimate "Mama’s Boy" and I was determined to convert Wolfie into one too. Somewhere along the way Wolfie helped to heal my broken heart and was a wonderful companion for Sammy.
In 2007 Sammy died at the ripe old age of 15. I told Wolfie that he would have to be an only dog as I didn’t think my heart could stand being broken over and over as each one had to leave us. Wolfie had other ideas! He missed his Sammy terribly. Wolfie loved the ladies and wanted another lady friend. I felt so bad for him that we decided to adopt another dachshund. When we brought Angel home to meet Wolfie he ran right up to her, smelled her and declared her his girl. Luckily Angel was okay with that. Six months later we adopted Biscuit (unfortunately for Wolfie, a boy). A year later we started fostering, and failed with our first one. Wolfie had another lady friend named Lily.
Wolfie not only showed me that loving another dog was the way to heal my heart, but that I needed to take time to enjoy life. Wolfie’s favorite thing was to sit on the deck and watch his domain. He would bark to let all the neighbor dogs know he was out and they would answer him. Of course I had to sit on the deck with him or he would cry. I learned quickly that in Wolfie’s world this was much more important then cleaning, laundry or any other chore that needed doing. Wolfie’s right!!
I wish Wolfie’s story had a happier ending, but he too had to leave us recently. My heart is broken again, but because of Wolfie I know how to heal it. I’m sure he is with Sammy enjoying deck time in heaven.
Rest in peace my friend. I miss you terribly.
